Distractions

Do you ever sit back and think that society has become too "plugged in", that the mystery of life is beginning to escape us as a people? While technology has made life simpler than it ever has been, it still seems like we could do better without a couple of our daily gadgets and gizmos. As a software developer, this produces a little bit of an inner battle. People spend so much time on their phones. They let them take over their entire lives. Wake up? Check your phone. Walking? Check your phone. Going to sleep? Better check your phone first. It is insane how society has become so dependent on a piece of technology that is fairly new. I am at the point now where I would almost rather not release the next big "Facebook" or social-this-or-that app. People spend so much time on their virtual lives in these social products that they become these modern schizophrenic people that can't seem to unify their two lives that should always have been one in the first place.

Technology is a huge boost to humanity. It has given us medicine, communications, and global access to information. Now, we are going to Mars and dragging an asteroid into orbit around the moon. This is incredible! My only hope is this. Don't forget where you come from people. Be yourself. Don't become too dependent on anything in this world. It's all only temporary. Be a good judge of distractions in your lives. They are literally surrounding us.
